Open Road 03:17
OPEN ROAD ( 3:16 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley I pulled my hat down on my head, and I stuck my thumb out in the wind I got tired of this crazy little town, and the road was calling me “old friend” I hitched my way out across the prairie, I slept out in the wind and rain I can’t tell you when I’ll see you, I might not be this way again Time sure flies when you’re busy living Then it creeps along slow when you’re dead An open road and some empty pockets, All the little things that we left unsaid Well I got my Daddy’s beat up rifle, I got my mama’s good luck charm I got my Uncle’s John B Stetson, and my life is rolling right along I hold this open road in my hands, and I remember where it’s been Of broken hearts and broken bottles, all the little things that won’t mend Time sure flies when you know your leaving And it moves real slow after you’re gone An open road and some empty pockets When the days are cold & the nights are long Time sure flies when you’re busy living And it moves real slow after your gone An open road and some empty pockets The little things that we can’t bring along Time sure flies when you know your leaving And it moves real slow after you’re gone My heart knows what to hold onto An open road and an old love song

YOU'RE THE ONE I PREFER ( 3:14 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley I’ve seen good times, I’ve seen bad times, I’ve seen in between I’ve been broke, and I’ve had money, I’ve watched this valley turn from green to brown and back to green There’s no telling, what will come next, all I know for sure I’ll be lovin’, you like always, you’re the one that I prefer! I’ve seen drought and I’ve seen famine, I’ve seen this river rise and flood Strained the clay thru my teeth, from this dirty water when all I had to drink was this here mud But everything's right, and god’s in heaven, and I know that he’s watchin’ over me Cause I got you here, and that’s enough, you really satisfy me When the roll is called up yonder, we’ll go two by two In God’s glory, we’ll be together, you’ll have me and I’ll have lil' ol’ you There’s no telling, what will come next, and all I know for sure I’ll be lovin’, you like always, you're the one that I prefer!
3.
BORROWED TIME ( 4:00 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley There’s some things that you don’t understand And I can’t bring myself to tell you I’ve been livin’ on the land But I can’t seem to help that I’m still blue... You’ve told me that you love me And you’ve shown it in a hundred little ways I can’t seem to shake the melancholy That I feel from day to day And I’ve seen the look that flickers across your eyes When you tell me things are fine I can’t help but realize that You and I are living on borrowed time... We don’t see eye to eye on so many things But I can’t seem to move you And I know that you really care But what I want is to somehow reach through... Your smile is thin disguise and your laughter Much more distant than before If I could melt the ice on your wings and somehow Break down slammin’ doors I’ve seen the look that flickers across your eyes When you tell me things are fine I can’t help but realize that You and I are living on borrowed time... Someday it might occur that There’s nothing left between us to get over Our hearts might return to the days of wine & song And fields of clover...

GOD LOVE'S THE WORKIN' MAN ( 3:00 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley I can’t help but thinking that the good lord has a fondness for the working class And that men who toil & sweat, for the love of God & family will be saved at last The Good Book says we’re brothers, as we’re walking thru this world two by two God loves saints & sailors, cowards thieves & failures and you know that God loves hippies, too Well Jesus was a long hair, and he wore those Roman sandals like no Okie would He loved them that crucified him, that nailed his aching body to that slab of wood No outlaw ever scared him, and no one who ever failed him could resist his love So we’ll gather by the water, when the roll is called up yonder & we’ll join him in God’s kingdom up above Daddy loved us children, and he taught us that we should always respect the land He said “The devil has a way of making us his slaves, if we have idle hands” He put food on the table for my brothers, sisters and my mom and me Then we’d say grace & thank the lord for the crops & rain & the love of family I can’t help but thinking theres a special place in heaven for the workin men and that love will easily prevail, overcoming each and every mortal’s sins The Good Book says we’re brothers, as we’re walkin thru this world hand in hand God loves saints and sailors, & folks who live in trailers And you know god loves the working man

White Cross 03:47
WHITE CROSS ( 3:42 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley There’s a white cross on the highway where you breathed your last breath There was nothing in my life before to prepare me for your death Now soon I will be leaving cause my time has neared it’s end I will die without you my love, I’ll die without my friends I’ll take with me the memories of the sweet love that you gave But who will be around to put fresh flowers on your grave? The dress you wore the day we met, the letters that you wrote I’ve saved them all for these ten years, and never gave up hope That somehow you would find a way, to reach me from beyond And I’d be here in love with you, just like you’d never gone Well I’ll take with me the memory of the sweet love that you gave But who will be around to put fresh flowers on your grave? The voices in my ear won’t stop, you know they’re not my own They're the voices of our fathers and they’re calling us back home Now soon I will be leaving, cause my time has neared it’s end I will die without you my love, I’ll die without my friends I’ll take with me the memories of the sweet love that you gave But who will be around to put fresh flowers on my grave? CASHED IN MY OLD LIFE ( 3:46 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley Well I cashed in my old life for the one that you see now It don’t mean that I’m a loser, it just means that I know how But I’d give away life’s shiny things just to see you one more time Are you a warm light here beside me or a poison in my mind? I thought the last tears that I’d cry for you had already been shed I claimed a million times “it’s over” and a thousand times we’d wed Now I’m lonesome on the highway, there’s no one to take me in Nobody knows where I’m going, not my ex-lovers or my next of kin Now I might do some things that don’t make sense to you And I’ll ask you please forgive me if I seem a bit confused You call me and you tell me that you don’t have no regrets Someday you might be lonesome, I’ll be damned hard to forget I cashed in my old life for the one that you see now It don’t mean that I’m a loser, it just means that I know how
8.
OTHER TRAILS TO RIDE ( 3:58 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley Put me on my favorite pony Point us toward the settin’ sun Please make sure my hat’s tipped right And there’s bullets in my gun Light my final cigarette Raise your hand into a wave I’ve tried to live with dignity Now I’d like to die that way I’d like to die that way... Let my bones lay where they fall In a canyon long and deep Give my weary mind a rest and let my spirit sleep Pat my son upon his head and tell him not to cry Your daddy’s gone forever But you’ll see him when you die You’ll see him when you die... When this ol’ paint comes back alone Give him oats and give him hay Brush him down and turn him out And put my tack away Raise your glass up to your lips Have another shot of rye Say a prayer and wish me well I’ve got other trails to ride I’ve got other trails to ride... You know how much I’ve loved the road That I’ve been down with you And all those pretty sunflowers And all the hard miles too That time we bedded down by a little rocky stream I loved all the good times & bad And everything in between I’ve loved everything in between... Don’t forget the trail we rode together far & wide Even though you can’t see me I’m still here by your side The cataract still spills and falls The meadowlark still sings I loved you in your waking hours, Now I’ll love you in your dreams I’ll love you in your dreams...

Grace 04:53
GRACE ( 4:50 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley I had a dream, that all the streets were silver There were pieces of gold, danglin’ from the trees I said a prayer, dear god have mercy, On yer children, down on their knees Well the lord said son, you don’t have to worry I've been watchin’ you all these years I gave my blood to wash your sins down and I will vanquish, all of your fears Good will prevail, over the forces of evil Might will make way, for the meek of heart All yer travails, will soon be over In heaven above, you can make a fresh start And there before my eyes, lay a mighty table Spread with milk and butter and bread as sweet as cane And the lord said son, come and sit at my table When this feast is done you can join your world again And the lion will lay down with the lamb, and close his eyes to rest And the forces of darkness will crouch and hide, cause they all failed my test And your spirits will rise up thru the sky, and meet me face to face And a lifetime of sins will wash away from a simple act of Grace Well when I awoke, the sun was shining There was the sound of children’s laughter, hanging in the air I looked down at my feet, and all the flowers had perty little blossoms on ‘em And I knew that He was everywhere
10.
TRAIN IN THE DISTANCE ( 1:47 ) Words & Music by Dave Insley There’s a train in the distance The sight of you lying here All alone in our bedroom I run my hand thru your hair I pull you over beside me I hold your hand in my own I whisper to you don’t be afraid Remind you your not alone And you quiver and sigh And sometimes softly cry When all the things you’ve been through Have got the better of you But you can hold back your tears Let that old train roll on by You don’t have to worry Cause I’m here with you tonight...

about

The follow-up to 2005's critically acclaimed Dave Insley debut, "Call Me Lonesome" finds Insley collaborating with CML alums Rick Shea (Dave Alvin Band), Rosie Flores, PH Naffah (Peacemakers), Diana Lee & Chris Gough, along with newcomers Amanda Cunningham, Pat Johnson & Dave Gleason, for a ten-song love letter called "Here With You Tonight." Dave's unique songwriting and deep, rich baritone have earned him a reputation as one of the Southwest’s most original artists and "Here With You Tonight" provides further evidence that the reputation is deserved. Effortlessly blending Country, Swing, Folk and Gospel, Insley shines a light into the dark corners of the heart, and narrates the journey with ironic detachment. Emphasis tracks include "Open Road," a loping, desert-influenced road ballad; "You're The One I Prefer," a swingin' duet with Amanda Cunningham; and "South of the Border," performed with Rosie Flores.
