Beatin' Ya Down ( 3:54 ) Dave Insley (Crawl Daddy Music, BMI) You say you'd like to leave for New York City I guess you'd like to try out something new That ol' Greyhound bus is waitin', for you to just make up your mind Are you dying here, or just livin' with these blues? I think that you'd like sunny California The weather's good and the people are so fine That ol' car of yours is waitin', for you to just jump in and go Are you leavin', will you just make up your mind? The world's been beatin' ya down Makin' ya feel like a clown The world's been beatin' ya down You're the funniest joke in this whole damned town When the world's been beatin' ya down I never thought that I could live without her I never thought that I could be alright But that view outside my window, keeps on changin' with each curve I'll keep on movin' til I reach the night

West Texas Wine ( 3:24 ) Dave Insley (Crawl Daddy Music, BMI) Well they say that there's gold buried in those hills, and the Devil rides a horse so fine All I remember from my time down there is the taste of West Texas Wine Liars and cheaters and Chiso's ghosts, and the souls of dyin' men Wander the streets of Presidio, and the hills down around Big Bend They say John Glanton had a taste for blood, or maybe that he lost his mind But the story I hear from my time down there, he was drunk on West Texas Wine Bobcat Carter was the last outlaw, and everybody knew his name The lights in the sky are a maiden's tears, the desert can drive you insane Many men died combing thru those hills, looking for the Haystack Mine All the wealth that you need can be had for free, in the taste of West Texas Wine If you go down there and your throat gets dry, try a place by the railroad line Fill up your glass with something dark & sweet, try a taste of West Texas Wine Everybody has a favorite drink, I reckon that you know what's mine It's as dark & sweet as those bloody streets, try a taste of West Texas Wine Well I woke up in a pool of sweat, on the tile by the bathroom floor Somebody wrote murder on the hotel mirror, I remember from the night before I spent the night fightin' with a drunken ghost, my hands were bloody & sore So I had me a drink and it tasted sweet, so I had about 2 or 3 more Well they say that there's gold buried in those hills, and the Devil rides a horse so fine All I remember from my time down there is the taste of West Texas Wine
3.
Come See What's Left Of Your Man ( 2:44 ) Johnny Darrell Last night I went to bed, with my head on a street corner curb Some kinda fool kicked me away, I thought it was an elephant herd Well I made it to a flophouse, I paid my last cent to lay my body down Checkout time came much too soon to be broke and stuck downtown Hey hey woman, come see what's left of your man Hey hey woman, come see what's left of your man When I woke up this morning, I had $200 worth of shakes It only took me 2 days to drink up the check, it took me 2 weeks to make I got 2 days worth of whiskers, I better have a drink before I shave I'm shakin' so bad I might cut my own throat, and I ain't ready for the grave Well if I ever get back on my feet, I ain't never gonna drink no more gin Hey there boss won't you have a little mercy, let me have my old job again Well alright you stubborn fool, but I'm the best worker you ever had But if you don't want me diggin' in your ditch, it ain't a gonna make me mad
4.
Geneva's Gonna Leave Ya ( 3:51 ) Dave Insley (Crawl Daddy Music, BMI) "Geneva's gonna leave ya" was something daddy said He said it nearly every day until the day that he dropped dead But Geneva never left us, she stuck around thru thick & thin Geneva was my momma, and she was always good to him The were just two folks in love back then, when they started raisin' kids Daddy was a farmer and I'll tell ya what mom did Waited tables at a cafe by the freeway exit sign Gave dad all her tips at night, well, except for some mad money that she'd hide Things were tough and times were hard but in the long run maybe not They always had each other and lord knows that that's a lot One by one us children came, and I was number five I never knew how well-off I was, but I was glad to be alive The Midwest in the 60's was a fine place to grow up There were always home-grown vegetables and lots of family love I learned to drive a tractor before I learned to drive a car We'd sleep out on the porch at night and count a thousands stars There were always lots of dogs & cats, and us kids would build a fort We'd fall out of our treehouses but we never did get hurt And mom & dad were always there, and they seemed to stay in love I hope they're still together now in heaven up above Well the years passed and we moved away to the cities and the coast But I remember my childhood as the time I loved the most Geneva never left us then, you know she never left dear dad She was a rock-of-ages cleft for me, the best mom I ever had Well Geneva finally did leave us, back in 2001 Daddy had died the year before, and this story is almost done Time keeps flying past us, just like the windows on a train But when I close my eyes I can see my dad, and I can hear the words he's saying Geneva's gonna leave ya, Geneva's gonna leave ya, Geneva, Geneva, Geneva!
5.
Drinkin' For Two ( 3:33 ) Michael Ferrell (Must We Fear Music, ASCAP) Another night in the same old bar, without you here to hold This empty barstool next to me is getting cold 2 drinks I bought are getting warm, I wonder what to do with yours? I guess I'll drink 'em down and order 2 more I hope I see you here tonight, when our favorite song is played You'll realize what a big mistake we've made Maybe we can laugh about the past, just like we used to do But it looks like I'll be drinking for two Drinkin' for too many nights, thinking it'll be alright I'm all alone once again, sittin' here missin' you But tonight I'll be drinkin' for two Swingin' doors that open wide, underneath the exit sign You stroll in looking like an angel divine But you're not alone, I should have known, you found somebody new And it looks like I'll be drinkin' for two
6.
Ol' What's Her Name ( 3:07 ) Fuzzy Owens I'll admit that there've been lots of pretty girls I've known There's been lots of bossy Mays and Mary Janes But there's one that stands out above the others I'll never forget ol' what's her name! Time will never drive her from my memory No one else will ever mean so much to me Ever since we've been apart my life ain't been the same I'll never forget ol' what's her name A lot of my friends like to ask me what ever happened to her I just smile and say, "I forgot her name" They'll never know the pain that I've endured I'll never forget ol' what's her name
7.
Waitin' Where She Hides ( 3:27 ) Michael Ferrell (Must We Fear Music, ASCAP) Stay inside, lock the door, shut the blind, but like before She'll find me, waitin' where she hides Turn out the lights and then, cut the phone but once again She'll find me, waitin' where she hides I thought I left her far behind, I can't think to keep her off my mind I moved to the other side of town, I changed my name but now I don't know just how to disappear My closet's full of bones, no room to call my own But lately it's been loneliness I fear One day she left me far behind, a dear John letter with no reason why She cordoned off her heart, but she left the door ajar Maybe I should start it up again She wears a thin disguise, of someone I despise I can see it in her eyes it'll never end
8.
Everything's Broken Again ( 4:51 ) Dave Insley (Crawl Daddy Music, BMI) My coffee cup fell to the floor with a crash, my car hasn't run for a week My boots have a hole in 'em the size of a quarter, my roof has just sprung a leak My washer & dryer haven't spoken in years, my favorite shirt has a rip My refrigerator just went on the fritz, but I don't have the cash to fix it Everything's broken again! My amp started smokin', just when I'd started hopin', that maybe my ship would come in Until then the money will be tighter than hell, a week's worth won't last a whole day Everything's broken except for my heart, but that somehow makes things okay My record player busted when I played Dave Dudley, my table has only 3 legs My TV is stuck on the Esteban channel, and my guitar is missing 5 pegs My front door won't open and my toilet wont flush and my cats are all losing their hair My light bulbs have burned out, and of course so have I, but somehow I really don't care I no longer call my coffee maker "Mr." ever since he let me down The hinges all broke off of my kitchen cabinets and the plumbing makes lots of strange sounds My swings have all swung and my springs have all swung and my monkey bars have all gone ape I sit on the floor since my sofa collapsed and I wait for the next thing to break
9.
Exit 93 03:04
Exit 93 ( 3:02 ) Dave Insley (Crawl Daddy Music, BMI) For thirty years my wife and I have lived out on the road This sleeper cab's the only place we've ever called our home Somehow we raised our children in between the mileposts We taught 'em right from wrong as this truck rolled from coast-to-coast We traveled as a family every highway in this land We saw some things that ordinary folks won't understand We taught our kids to read by watchin' billboards on the way Sunday's at the truckstop chapel we taught them to pray Now I've gone and left my little family here to grieve I crashed that rig out west of town by exit 93 I don't know how I knew to leave my family off this run We kissed goodbye, I drove away, into the setting sun A wall of dust closed on me as I braked and turned away A busload of small children had appeared out of the grey The desperate swerve that took my life, the fatal choice I made A trooper said, "Are they alright?" was the last words that I'd say Well if your out near Tonapah, westbound on highway 10 Watch for the cross that marks the spot just where my logbook ends My widow's got a job in town, my kids enrolled in school Please say a prayer to Jesus for all truck driving fools Now I'm up in Heaven, drivin' big rigs for the lord I'm haulin' harps and angels wings and bibles by the score The highway's here in Heaven are much safer than below But the memory of my little ones is a might heavy load Now I've gone and left my little family here to grieve I crashed that rig out west of town by exit 93
10.
Don't Take It Away ( 7:12 ) Troy Seals, Max Barnes I've been lookin' for ya all night long darlin', you've got to talk to me I want to tell ya how wrong I've been, and how I ain't gonna do that again, That woman didn't mean a thing to me Now I hope I don't embarrass you, here in front of your friends, I'm gonna get down on my knees Please, let me make it Please, I can't give you up You've made love so good, for me, so long Don't take it away, true love don't come easy Darlin' I'm sorry, I stepped over the line Don't take it away, don't make me go crazy I will follow you, to the end of my mind Darlin' from now on I wanna be the kind of man, that you can lean on And if the waters of life get a little too deep, I'd like to be your steppin' stone I remember all those nights you'd take a hold of me, and you'd hold on

about

Dave's third album "West Texas Wine," recorded in Austin, Texas, and featuring Dave's road band, "The Careless Smokers," is an upbeat collection of new originals and classic-but-obscure covers, all staples of the Smokers‘ live set. From the opening rock rhythms of "Beatin' Ya Down," through the pedal steel-drenched closer, Conway Twitty's "Don't Take It Away," Dave touches upon all of the varieties of themes and sounds which have earned him fans and praise on his previous outings. The title track "West Texas Wine" sets historical anecdote, ghost story and personal experience to a spaghetti western soundtrack, while piano and acoustic guitar warm "Geneva's Gonna Leave Ya," a tender homage to Dave's mom, and growing up on a farm. Party-time covers of Johnny Darrell’s “Come See What’s Left Of Your Man” and Fuzzy Owens’ “Ol What’s Her Name” fit alongside Insley’s ultra-country “Everything’s Broken Again” and the truck driving ballad “Exit 93.” Hundreds of shows and years together on the road have honed Insley and his Smokers’, and this lively, unique blend of Honky-Tonk, Tex-Mex and Arizona Hillbilly music is pure gold, Dave's best album yet.
